Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering is expanding its use of tire shreds and tire bales as new applications are being brought on line throughout the U.S.  One of the more frequent uses is Engineered Lightweight Fill (E.L.F.) incorporating tire shreds and tirle bales.  The fastest growing application of E.L.F. is in landfill and highway construction.

The five purposes that shreds are used for in landfill construction are:
     >Leachate collection systems
     >gas venting systems
     >cap closures
     >operational liners
     >alternate daily cover

Tire shreds are also being used as vibration dampening layers under rail lines.  Front Range Tire Recycle has furnished tire shreds for the new Light Rail expansion in Denver.  Septic system drain fields are also becoming a widespread application.  The Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment has approved the use of tire shreds in leach field applications.  Subgrade fill and insulation usages have also been deployed.  The cost of using shreds is dramatically less than conventional construction materials.  The insulation value of the shreds make for less road maintenance, and a more durable roadway.  They also work very well for backfill behind retaining walls and bridge abutments.  The shreds are free draining and have low horizontal pressure against the wall.
